Biaxially oriented films, most notably BOPP and BOPET, make up a significant part of the worldwide production of polymer films. The output of a single biax line can be as much as 1–2 billion sqm per year. For a long time, surface pretreatment in biax film plants has been limited to corona and flame treatment inside the take-up section of the film extrusion line. During the last few years this has started to change in two ways. Available surface treatment technologies, particularly in the field of corona and plasma technologies, are evolving rapidly and, partially because of that, surface treatment is now being used in other locations of the extrusion line as well as even other areas of the entire biax plant.

Corona is the Swiss army knife of pre-treatment. Nevertheless, there is room for a toolbox. While converting is not limited to polymer films, this material still seems to define the proper tool for pre-treatment in general. In addition to innovative plasma technologies that offer alternatives to traditional coating processes, a wide range of product innovations offered by plasma treatment specialists simply do the pre-treatment job better than the Swiss army knife corona on non-polymer film substrates, such as metal foils, polymer foams, and fibre based materials such as textiles and non-wovens.

Plasmawerk Hamburg builds up expert team for the US market

Plasmawerk Hamburg GmbH expands its team of experts for the US market. As of April 1, 2013, Ryan Parker Dye and Udo Skarke will represent Plasmawerk Hamburg and its innovative products for surface treatment within the US and the Americas.

Since its foundation in 2009, the Plasmawerk Hamburg GmbH had its main focus on the innovative development of plasma surface treatment technologies for web materials of all widths.

Ryan Parker Dye has been working for Plasmawerk in Hamburg since 2010 and was deeply involved in the construction of the main developments realized in the last three years. All major innovation have been realized within the Hamburg team he was part of. Ryan Dye will be in charge of technical affairs within the US.

Udo Skarke just lately joined the team after having been with MAHLO USA as general manager for 7 years and after that having lead Erhardt + Leimer, USA, as its president for 8 years. Udo Skarke will take care of sales and services for the german specialist in plasma treatment.

In July 2009, the Plasmawerk Hamburg GmbH was founded to accelerate the transformation of innovations in the field of surface pretreatment into marketable technologies. Plasmawerk Hamburg GmbH designs and sells atmospheric-pressure plasma process machinery for efficient and cost-effective surface activation and functionalization.

One tool to fix it all? Corona has been seen as the all-rounder of pre-treatment for a long time. Although this is still unchallenged, recently there are more and more applications that cannot be solved perfectly with this well-established technology. This is especially valid for materials whose properties deviate from form and composition of a web based plastics film. For decades, web like materials have been the primary target for the improvement of corona technology, in order to deliver best results for even thinner and more flexible films, since these materials represent the most important applications by far. However, there are materials that differ from the common coordinates in size and components and some of the niches that might not have been economically worth bothering with 30 years ago, have now grown to be profitable markets. Above all, non polymer film substrates, such as metal foils, polymer foams, and fibre based materials such as textiles and nonwovens that in some of their properties – e.g. to be treatable as web like film – are similar to film, but in other ways differ significantly, and therefore demand to reconsider suitable pre-treatment solutions. download PDF

Plasmawerk Hamburg introduces new CM Hi-Power series of corona treaters 

Plasmawerk Hamburg GmbH, a German supplier for plasma and corona treatment systems, have successfully launched their new CM Hi-Power series of corona treaters during CHINAPLAS 2012 in Shanghai. This new series was developed with the specific requirements of the BOPP customers in China in mind, offering an outstanding price/performance ratio. It is based on the Plasmawerk PWP 1.75-1 high performance corona power supplies with max. 75 kW output power, allowing the BOPP maker to treat the film with max. 150 kW corona power, using only two electrode housings per corona station. Besides corona, Plasmawerk also displayed a double side CAPSControlled Atmosphere Plasma System to the Chinese audience, for dedicated chemical modification of the polymer film surface in a controlled nitrogen atmosphere, aiming to replace chemical primers and anchor coatings in a very cost efficient way.

Plasmawerk Hamburg Awarded Major Contract for BIAX Corona Systems

After a thoroughly successful start in 2010 and the delivery of several innovative corona and plasma systems, the Hamburg-based provider has now secured one of the largest orders for BOPP pretreatment systems ever awarded. In this case, the customer is the Andritz AG, a market leading mechanical engineering group in the pulp and paper industry, based in Graz, Austria. With the acquisition of certain assets of the insolvent DMT Technologies, ANDRITZ Biax has extended its product range to include modern stretch film production lines for the production of BOPP and BOPET films. The corona systems supplied by Plasmawerk Hamburg are an important component within the first newly ordered machines of the ANDRITZ AG.


Plasmawerk can build on years of experience with this kind of corona system: The entire executive team has spent years designing corona and plasma systems, including BOPP pretreatment systems. As early as mid-April, the Plasmawerk Hamburg GmbH will be shipping to ANDRITZ Biax the first of three systems for double sided corona pretreatment with a working width of 8.2 m and an operating speed of more than 500 m/min. Two further systems will be shipped during the course of the year. Each system is made of special steel and boasts three separate corona stations with a total of 480 kW plasma output. Together, the three systems have a total output of 1.44 MW (megawatt), which very well might be the largest order in the history of corona technology.
